WALK #2: A COUNTRY WALK TO THE HARGREAVES ARMS PUBLIC HOUSE 

DISTANCE: 1 MILE

STARTING POINT: ROSSENDALE HOLIDAY COTTAGES

Leave the holiday cottages by the main gate and turn right onto Dean Lane. Follow Dean Lane for 1/8 mile to the junction of Burnley Road in the center of Water.

Turn right up Burnley Road with the children's playground on your right hand side. Just past the park before Springside Bridge follow the footpath sign and cross Burnley Road. Follow the track up the hill towards the farm. Follow the signs to set off Burnley Road on this short walk to the Hargreaves Arms. This path will take you off Burnley Road and towards Lumb.

Go directly across the farmyard onto the track at the opposite side. Follow the track for 1/8 mile past two barns up to a three-gate intersection with a wooden finger post.

At the fingerpost take the left hand gate following the direction to Lumb. Follow the bridle path adjacent to the stone wall.

Follow the bridle path for 1/8 mile through a couple of bridal gates until you reach a second fingerpost. Turn left and continue to follow the bridle path in the direction of Lumb. At the fingerpost stop and admire the 360 degree panoramic view of the beautiful countryside.

After turning left follow the track through the steel farm gate and continue to follow the path downhill towards Lumb. At the bottom of the bridal path you will come to the last gate by some farm buildings. Go through the gate and you find yourself on Peers Clough lane. Follow the lane now downhill for 1/4 mile.

At the bottom of the lane it turns into a tarmac road by the side of the Millennium Park where there are picnic benches and a nature observation platform.

After passing the gardens you will find yourself back on Burnley Road. Turn right and follow the footpath around the corner and you will find yourself at the Hargreave Arms pub.

The Hargreaves Arms serves good value cheap and cheerful pub grub. They have a selection of all the usual ales, beers, spirits and wines. They also have Sky Sports in the bar. (Please check opening times)

To return to the holiday cottages you can either return the way you came or alternatively follow Burnley Road back to Water. In Water there is one pub called The Commercial Arms. Turn right back up Dean Lane after a short distance you will find yourself back at the Rossendale Holiday Cottages.
